ABOUT ME

Hi there my name is Paul Kearvell, currently I am living in Sydney Australia, originally from Adelaide in the beautiful hills town of Strathalbyn. I have been a lover of the visual arts and music from an early age.

During my Schooling years I was an above average Art Student and was highly regarded by my teachers and from the age of 9 years old I began learning the drums in the local concert band in Strathalbyn.

In 1992 at the end of High School I received the Junior First Prize in the Victor Harbor Art Show  in SA.

In 1993 at Art school my eyes were opened to a more experimental and spontaneous approach to my work and discovered what would be the foundation to my current organic style. At the end of this Certificate I received high marks for my subjects especially my Jewelry topics. At this time I also received the Class Prize for Jewelry.

During the following years I sold private works through word of mouth, while exploring my freedom to create.

In 2000 after working in a factory environment for a year, the company I was with offered me an apprenticeship in Fitting and Machining. It wasn’t long before I saw great opportunity to transfer the metalworking skills I was learning into more Artistic applications, such as Jewelry and Sculpture. In this year I bought my first camera and continued my journey as a novice photographer since my study at Art School.

In 2003 I produced my first component based sculpture which was exhibited along with some of my Paintings at the Kintoai Gallery in Adelaide (this sculpture is documented on this website as MECHANICA-1) . The Piece was not purchased but generated a great deal of interest . During this year my attentions began to turn more towards business. Business in the form of developing a clothing label of my own while exercising my creative ability in a design nature. I taught myself with the help of a friend how to use some of the Graphic Design Programs available to me such as Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Freehand  I  researched tirelessly and began the process of registering the trademark to the Name and Logo of the label I created which I called CUBIT (there area few examples of these preliminary designs on this website) .

Under taking this project however proved harder to achieve in Adelaide than I had expected through lack of resources and after about a year and a half I abandoned the project.

In this time of exploring graphic design I discovered and began to focus on what is the basis of my Photographic concept today. With an appreciation of the abstract I began isolating portions of larger photographs to create an image that had its own identity and texture (some of these images are documented in this website).

In 2004 I finished my apprenticeship which ended my employment with that company. This also ended my ability to use the expensive machinery required to apply my mechanical sculpture ideas. This situation began my planning to establish a workshop of my own.Around this time I bought my first pair of turntables and began colecting records from various styles of music. I have always colected music of many forms and have now have a sizeable collection containing hundreds of CD's and Records. Since that time I have DJed at parties numerous times.

In 2006 I visited my best friend who was living in Sydney and discovered what living in a major city could hold for me as an Artist.

I moved to Sydney In October 2006 and am currently dabbling with selling my Photographic prints at various market stalls. I have created a new T-Shirt Label called “Gouldian” which is only conceptual at the moment. I have designed this Website myself which was implemented by my friend Kathrin Longhurst  and I have set up an online store for the purchase of my work on this site.

Since moving to Sydney I have purchased some music production software and am in the process of developing my ability and style as a producer. My continuous apreciation of rythm that has been growing since I first started drumming and my love of music in general has given me solid grounding to achive some good results already. You can listen to my Productions and Mixes on the MY MUSIC page on this site.

I am currently being featured as an unsigned artist as part of the Triple J Unearthed program.

Enjoy
